Costa Rica is a stunning blend of epic landscapes and rich cultural heritage. And its affordable costs makes it a great location to splurge, pamper yourself and explore all kinds of adventures. Known for its natural beauty, the country offers everything from mountains and volcanoes to rainforests and pristine beaches. Beyond its natural wonders, Costa Rica's coast is alive with vibrant Afro-Caribbean culture and history.
This tour visits Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast during their Black History Month on Black Peoples Day (Dia del Negro). This makes it a meaningful destination for travelers of the African diaspora seeking connection and kinship. Our tour explores the Pan-African linkage with Jamaica Town, Costa Rica, delving into the legacy of the one-time resident, activist Marcus Garvey and celebrating living legend Marta Johnson Maxwell, the first and only Black female governor of Limon Province, CR. Our tour also puts us in town during the Afro Roots & Cultural Festival, including the grand parade. If you love afrobeats, you wont want to miss this 24 hour celebration where regions of people gather in the streets to honor a rich history and culture with dancing, food, costumes and a parade that lasts ALL DAY! But that’s not all, while on the Caribbean coast, guests will have a chance to tour the city with a historian, dine with Governor Johnson, visit a national rainforest park and enjoy a beach day full of activity, food and shopping. Enjoy a communicative group stay as Mixy guests lodge together in a luxurious house with private rooms and amenities.
Additionally, a portion of each of Mixy’s annual visits contributes a generous donation to Jamaica Town’s Afro-Costarican Research Cultural Center. This donation will directly aid in rebuilding the Marcus Garvey Museum, which tragically burned down several years ago, as well as other Jamaica Town initiatives. By joining our tour, travelers not only experience the region’s rich culture and history but also have the opportunity to make a substantial contribution to the community.
Back in the capital, San José offers a rich cultural history and stunning mountain views. As part of the tour, Mixy guests will enjoy an all-inclusive city bus tour featuring key landmarks like the iconic National Theater and a bustling Central Mercado. Nestled in a valley surrounded by four mountains, we’ll be exploring San Jose’s vibrant culinary scene, lively nightlife, a highly recommended scenic 5K hike at Hacienda La Chimba featuring interactive photo spots and a dazzling dinner overlooking the city, complete with live cultural performances at Mirador Tiquicia Restaurant. Enjoy a private stay at unique guesthouses and hotels with single and double rooms.
We’re excited to welcome curious, culture-loving travelers to be part of this unforgettable adventure in Costa Rica. Whether you're drawn by the rich Pan-African history, the natural beauty, or the chance to connect with a like-minded community and have your vacation contribute to the region your visit, this tour offers something truly unique for everyone.
